About Faculty Programs
|

"It was the best workshop I have ever taken in my life. The teachers were dedicated. The attendees were interested. The material was fascinating. They worked us hard, but that was good!"
~ 2009 Bioinformatics Institute Attendee |
The Faculty Programs are sponsored by the
Education Board, American Society for
Microbiology (ASM) with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, National Institutes of
Health, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and numerous college and universities committed
to faculty development. We offer professional opportunities and networks for undergraduate science education reform. Each Institute is a unique experience designed to help empower science faculty to think beyond basic pedagogy to ask questions, design research and reach more students in your STEM disciplines.
Once accepted, you will (i) come to the Institute with a plan to change your classroom practices, (ii) design a 36-month plan to try new approaches, implement solutions, share information, and disseminate findings nationally through conferences and publications, and (iii) participate in a larger community of educators that continues to collaborate after the Institute.
The Institutes For Science Teaching offer:
EXPERTISE.
Institutes are developed and facilitated by recognized leaders at the forefront of undergraduate faculty professional development. These intensive, focused trainings emphasize new knowledge and cutting-edge resources for better teaching practices. Faculty Programs is dedicated to helping you find creative research based solutions to problems so that you can make the most of your teaching and student learning potential.
CONNECTION.
Attend one of our Institutes and you will open the door to a lasting network of committed colleagues to help you take your work from idea to action. Because our enrollment is limited, you will work closely in an ideal learning environment with your cohort in one-on-one conversations, small-group activities, and reflective learning.
IMPLEMENTION.
Faculty Programs Institutes emphasize the practical applications of what you've learned. You'll be given ample time during the institute to practice newly acquired skills in a nurturing environment and under close supervision with mentors. Upon returning to campus, you will experience continued support in your learning from colleagues and mentors through follow-up meetings (both virtual and face-to-face), e-posters, and e-mentoring.
